Kenyan President 1961-1978

Kenyatta started his job carier as a clerk in an Asian trading firm, later as a salesmanager for a European company. 1925 he became the chairman of the Kikuyu authority, 1928 he published his own magazine about the tribal culture of the Kikuyu. From 1931 to 1946 he lived in Great Britain, where he found and married his wife. Back in Kenya he engaged himself in the struggle for Kenyans independance, that is why in 1953 he was first arrested by the colonial government and jailed, later put under house arrest till 1961. On the 1st of Juni Kenyatta became first prime minister of the new, independent Kenya, on the 12th December 1964 Kenya became member of the British Commonwealth as an independent state, with Kenyatta as the president. Under his leadership Kenya enjoyed stability and economic growth. He introduced in 1974 free primary education for all Kenyans. 1978 Kenyatta died at the age of 89 years in his office in Mombasa.
