Kasavubu, Joseph

President of the DR Congo (1960-1965)

( ?.?.1917 - 24.03.1969)
Kasavubu wanted to become catholic priest, but stopped his education and worked as a teacher as well as an official for the Belgian colonial government. He engaged himself politically in the Abako Movement (Association des Bakongo), an association of the Bakongo tribes, where they elected him as their president. As a leader of this influential ethnic group Kasavubu was one of the key figures during Congos struggle for independence. 1960 he became the first president of the independent Congo. In the struggle for power between the various fractions, that started almost immediately after independence Kasavubu sacked in 1960 his prime minister Lumumba, something Lumumba did not accept. But with the help of Mobutu Lumumba was removed from power and executed, leaving Kasavubu as the president of Congo. But not for long, because when Mobutu succeeded with his coup in 1965, Kasavubu was forced to leave office. After this, Kasavubu left politics.
