Bourguiba, Habib Ben Ali

Bourguiba was without question one, if not the driving force on the Tunisian side fighting for independence from the colonial power France. He paid a high price for his struggle, was sent to jail sentences several times, but finally succeeded on 20. March 1956 achieving the independence treaty for Tunisia. After abolition of the monarchy 1957 Bourguiba was elected as the first president of Tunisia, 1975 he was elected president for life. In 1987 he started showing some mental weaknesses, that led finally to his removal from presidency in November 1987 for health reasons (senility).
