Amin, Idi Awo-Ongo Angoo
President of Uganda (1971-1979)
(17.05.1928 Kampala/Uganda - 16.08.2003 Jeddah/Saudi Arabien)
Amin was commander of the armed forces in Uganda serving under president Milton Obote, when he took over power on 25.01.1971 while Obote was abroad. He dumped Uganda into an economic chaos, expelled 1972 all Asians from Uganda and became well-known for strange behaviour, but more for his unprecedented brutality. Hundred of thousands of Ugandans were killed during his regime. In October 1978 Tanzania sent troops into Uganda, who joined with Ugandan rebels and reached in April 1979 the capital Kampala. Amin fled first to Libya, and later went to Saudi Arabia, where he lived till his death in exile.
