Aideed, Mohammed Farah
Militia leader in Somalia 19?? - 1996
(?.?.19?? - 3.08.1996)
Aideed was the leader of one fraction among the competing clan militias of the USC (United Somali Congress), where opponents of Siad Barre had been originally united, fighting for power in the past-Barre-era. When 1993 UN-Troops were sent to Somalia to ease the tensions among the militias, Aideed became sadly wellknown for killing and mutilating on June 5 1993 23 Pakistani peacekeepers. After this terrible incident the US dominated UN-Troops started an unprecedented manhunt for Aideed, in which also a number of US-Soldiers lost their lives. But Aideed was not caught. In March 1995 the UN-Troops were removed from Somalia, their mission had failed. Aideed remained on the run, he was stripped from power by his party USC in June of that year and died almost one year later on wounds resulting from a local shootout.
