Abacha was army chief of staff and minister of defense, when he took power in a coup after the existing military government of Ibrahim Babangida had annulled the results of the 1993 elections, that were won by a Moshood Abiola, a social democrat. Abacha dismantled most of the democratic institutions and according to allegations took around 4 Billion USD of the countries oil profits. He scheduled democratic elections for 01.08. 1998, where he as expected was going to run as the lone (!) candidate, when he suddenly died in office.
