This cooperation was founded among 15 states in May 1975, in 1977 Cape Verde joined and became the sixteenth member. Here is the aim also to create a common market as well as harmonising the various national regulations on trade. On top of this five of the members not belonging to the CFA-zone UEMOA (Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Nigeria, Sierra Leone) decided to create a monetary union latest by 1.7.2005.
